The Lions
Hearing Dog Centre at Verdun is the National
training, administration and demonstration
facility for the provision without charge of
hearing dogs to deaf and hearing-impaired
persons in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
Established in
1982 the existing centre provides office
facilities, indoor sound training facility and
outdoor training and demonstration areas, dog
kennels and a manager’s residence in a pleasant
rural setting.
For some years
the Board of Lions Hearing Dogs Inc. and other
Lions have been concerned with the lack of
indoor facilities which affects the efficiency
and continuity of training for the hearing dogs.
Staff, dogs,
visitors, potential users and tourists are all
affected by the use of outdoor training and
demonstration spaces in difficult and inclement
weather conditions.
Facilities in the New
Centre
The proposed
development consists of a training and
demonstration area, entrance foyer, toilets,
kitchen and storage areas.
A kitchen is
included together with mandatory toilets and
disabled facilities. Verandahs, a covered way
from the Office area and a foyer will provide
waiting areas and shelter for larger groups of
tourists, school students and visitors.

I am pleased to report
that as a result of a very recent review of the
current and future needs (15 years) of the Lions
Hearing Dogs facilities, we have reduced the
size and type of facility that was initially
planned. It is invisaged that having completed
our current fund raising program and having
received a grant from the Lions Clubs
International foundation, we will be able to
construct what is needed to meet the needs of
the Lions Hearing Dogs program and be debt free.
