The Lions
Hearing Dogs are predominantly sourced from
the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals (RSPCA) and the Animal Welfare
League. Their fate had already been determined
to either be adopted within a specific period,
or to be put down. The dogs are trained, placed
and certified to work with an individual that is
deaf or has a severe hearing impairment.
These working dogs are extensively trained to
respond to a variety of auditory cues;
a baby crying, a smoke alarm,
an alarm clock, a door buzzer or bell,
a ringing telephone, a knock at the door,
a microwave timer, a whistling kettle,
and other unfamiliar domestic, environmental or
community sounds that are necessary to everyday
safety and independence.
The Lions Hearing Dog is often taught in
simple sign language as well as verbal
communication.
They are also thoroughly obedient and town
trained to behave in public on buses,
restaurants, escalators etc.
Lions Hearing Dogs are Accredited
Professional working animals, which are legally
accepted by law as "guide dogs" in all states of
Australia.
